Located in the Western Kyrgyzstan between Aksy and Talas regions, the Chatkal district has always been an attractive site for pilgrimages and tourists for its virgin nature, distinctive culture and historic sites. According to a legend, the prophet Idris (Enoch?), who is the highly respected saint for Chatkalians, ascended to Heavens on the hill near Jany Bazar town in Chatkal, where his supposed tomb is located. Chatkal is also a fatherland of the Noghoy tribe – the descendants of the legendary hero Manas.
